DHL Opens the Largest Domestic HUB in Mexico in Querétaro

The Governor launched the operations of the expansion of the German shipping and logistics provider.

The project represents an investment of 120 million USD, which includes infrastructure expansion and updates to automated technology to boost productivity and operational efficiency at AIQ.

The Governor of Querétaro, Mauricio Kuri González, inaugurated the operations of DHL’s domestic air HUB located at Querétaro International Airport (AIQ). This expansion represents a significant investment of 120 million USD aimed at expanding infrastructure, updating automated technology, and implementing sustainable practices to improve the overall operational efficiency and productivity of DHL's logistics operations in the region.

This HUB, which is now the largest in Mexico and the most advanced in Latin America, will allow DHL to triple its previously installed capacity in Querétaro. The Governor emphasized the positive impact of this investment, not only in increasing the company's operational capacity but also in reinforcing the trust that DHL's executives have placed in the state. This expansion strengthens the relationship between DHL and its commercial partners, generating new air and land routes, which will boost productivity and efficiency in the region.

During his speech, the Secretary of Sustainable Development, Marco Antonio Del Prete Tercero, highlighted that the expansion of DHL's operations at the AIQ will further solidify its commercial relationships and allow for new routes to be created, contributing to increased productivity. Del Prete emphasized that the Querétaro Airport has become a key element in the state's overall competitiveness, particularly in the logistics and transportation sectors. Querétaro currently ranks as the fourth-busiest airport in Mexico in terms of cargo movement.

Del Prete also pointed out that the expansion, which covers a 28,900-square-meter area, will have a positive impact on the operations of the airport, which recorded nearly 7,000 tons of cargo just in February. He emphasized that this growth is part of Querétaro’s ongoing commitment to attracting investment, fostering job creation, and supporting small businesses, particularly in challenging economic times. He expressed the state’s commitment to economic growth, noting that the installation of this new HUB is not just a boost for the state but for the entire region, helping establish Querétaro as a prominent logistics hub.

Further emphasizing the state's competitive advantages, Luis Felipe Rivas Villanueva, CEO of Terminal Logistics Kapital, praised DHL for its commitment to the environment, mentioning that the new facility is LEED Silver certified. The HUB also includes 610 solar panels, a rainwater collection system, and the use of regional and recycled materials, underscoring DHL’s dedication to sustainable practices. This aligns with the Querétaro Airport’s goal of reducing carbon emissions in the short term.

Rivas Villanueva also highlighted that Querétaro is positioning itself as a logistics hub of great strategic importance due to its location in the center of Mexico, its high-quality infrastructure, and its growing role in logistics and manufacturing. He further noted that the integration of this expanded infrastructure, along with a network of highways connecting the state to the rest of the country, makes Querétaro the ideal location for courier and cargo companies. The combination of air and ground transport capabilities allows companies like DHL to reach a significant portion of the country’s population within 24 hours.

In his address, John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express Global, pointed out that this expansion will lead to the creation of many new jobs in the region, helping local families and contributing to the prosperity of the area. He praised the work of the state authorities for making Querétaro a fertile ground for investment, particularly in the manufacturing and logistics sectors. Pearson also mentioned that the new facility will significantly increase DHL's capacity, with the HUB now able to handle up to 250,000 packages daily, showing the company’s commitment to growth in Mexico.

The CEO of DHL Express Mexico, Antonio Arranz Lara, emphasized that the Querétaro HUB is crucial to the company’s future in Mexico, as it will continue to connect hundreds of thousands of packages every night. The success of the new facility, he added, is a clear reflection of the ongoing efforts to build a stronger future for DHL Express in the country.

Querétaro has rapidly become a key logistics hub in Mexico, primarily due to its strategic location in the center of the country, as well as its modern infrastructure. The Querétaro International Airport has experienced significant growth in recent years, becoming an important logistics center for both air and ground transport. This growth has led to the airport becoming one of the most important cargo hubs in Mexico, with increased international and national demand for its services.

The expansion of DHL’s operations at the AIQ is part of the broader trend of Querétaro’s increasing importance in the logistics sector. With its well-developed transport infrastructure, which includes major highways and proximity to key industrial zones, the state has attracted both national and international investment, particularly from companies in the manufacturing and logistics sectors. DHL's expansion is set to enhance this trend, reinforcing Querétaro's position as a national leader in logistics services.

The combination of its strategic location, growing logistics infrastructure, and an attractive environment for both domestic and foreign investments ensures that Querétaro will continue to be an important player in Mexico's economic future. The new DHL HUB is a crucial part of this transformation, boosting the state's role in the global supply chain and helping companies operate more efficiently, whether they rely on air, land, or a combination of both transport methods.
